Professional Learning

The NSW Environmental Education Centre’s offer a range of professional learning opportunities for teachers, government and non government personnel and community members. The majority of these workshops are accredited with NESA and focus on developing sustainability focused teaching and learning programs.

 

Natural Teacher: Learning Beyond the Classroom – New

ES1/Stage 1/2/3/4/5/6 Teachers

The world beyond your classroom can provide all the ingredients you need to create amazing real-world learning experiences. This face-to-face course will provide participants with a range of hands-on ideas and fun pedagogical approaches for taking core curriculum learning outdoors. The course has a strong focus on enriching and extending the Geography, Science and English syllabus though high quality outdoor experiences.

We will investigate ways of integrating learning in nature, fieldwork, data collection, games and the authentic use of technology to create learning experiences that are highly engaging, support cross curriculum priorities and contribute to quality learning outcomes.

Participants will explore a range of outdoor learning activities that support inquiry learning and encourage students to think deeply, critically and creatively while developing environmental stewardship values and a stronger sense of concern and care for the environment.

We will examine current research into the significant value of learning in nature and how this can lead to improved student wellbeing. We will explore safe ways of engaging students in a variety of natural contexts.

Participants will learn how to provide students with an experiential curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, challenging and physically active through the integration of outdoor learning into their teaching and learning programs.

This course will contribute 5 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 2.6.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Natural Technology – New

Natural Technology is a professional learning day that is made up of three of our most popular technology sessions, Animation Outside, Filmmaking and Apps for Action. You can attend one session or all three.  You must enrol in each session you want to attend.

Each workshop will contribute 2 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing Professional Teaching Standards from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Combined all three workshops will contribute 6 hours  towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Geography Action 

Stage 4/5 Teachers

Geography Action will help participants develop an understanding of the geography inquiry process and how it applies to the development of sustainability focused and technology rich teaching and learning sequences that can result in positive action for the planet. Participants will examine and unpack Mobile Connections, a Stage 4 teaching and learning program developed to support the Interconnections strand in the Geography 7-10 Syllabus.

This course will provide attendees with an understanding of the 5 step sustainability action process that was used to embed the sustainability cross curriculum priority into Mobile Connections.

Participants will be introduced to the SAMR model of technology integration, and how this can be used to guide the meaningful use of technology in Geography. Participants will explore the use of apps and mobile devices to support the communication phase of the geography inquiry process.

This course will contribute 2 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 2.6.2 & 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Apps for Action: Learning Beyond the Classroom 

ES1/Stage 1/2/3/4/5/6 Teachers

Apps for Action: Learning Beyond the Classroom will provide practical and hands-on experience to participants in using a variety of iPad apps to create informative, innovative and engaging communication products.

The development and creation of successful communication products are a requirement of a variety of key learning areas including English, Science and Geography. 

Participants will learn how to effectively integrate the use of mobile technology into teaching and learning programs both inside and outside the classroom.

Independent Education Union Environment Conference – New

Learning Outside the Classroom

This conference will help unpack the many ways teaching and learning can be enhanced by taking students outside. We will explore safe ways of engaging students in a variety of outdoor contexts that will support learning throughout the curriculum.

Learning Outside the Classroom will provide participants with practical ideas and pedagogical approaches to taking learning outside. We will explore a range of hand-on multidisciplinary teaching and learning activities that will build skills and knowledge within subject-specific areas. We will investigate ways of supporting the sustainability cross curriculum priority and the integration of mobile technology.

This conference is led by the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre team. Collectively the centres staff have over 80 years of expertise in leading and developing curriculum focused teaching and learning programs in outdoor contexts.

This conference is aimed at people working with Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6 students.

Completing IEU Environment Conference 2019: Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6 – Learning Outside the Classroom will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 3.3.2; 3.4.2; 6.2.2; 6.3.2 and 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Digital Books: Learning Beyond the Classroom is an introductory course that aims to provide participants with the skills to create engaging interactive texts for iPads using iBooks Author on a Mac.

Participants will learn about good design principles and techniques to create visually engaging multimodal texts which foster curiosity and inspire learning.

Geography Outside: Fieldwork for Geographical Inquiry 

ES1/Stage 1/2/3 Teachers

Geography Outside will provide K-6 classroom teachers with a range of practical ideas, tools and methods for undertaking geography fieldwork in the school grounds, the local area and places further afield.

The course will build teachers’ confidence in embedding outdoor fieldwork experiences into geography teaching.

Through participation in fieldwork activities, the course will demonstrate how fieldwork is a core component of the acquiring step of the geographical inquiry process in collecting data for representing, analysing and interpreting data back in the classroom.

The course will also demonstrate a series of scaffolded fieldwork data processing activities that encourage students to think deeply, critically and creatively in formulating evidence-based conclusions and sustainable actions.

Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on the geographical concepts and steps of the geographical inquiry process will be explicitly modelled.

Successful completion of this course requires participation in the workshop and follow up activities.

This course will contribute 10 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 1.2.2, 2.2.2, 3.2.2, 3.4.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
