Professional Learning

The NSW Environmental Education Centre’s offer a range of professional learning opportunities for teachers, government and non government personnel and community members. The majority of these workshops are accredited with NESA and focus on developing sustainability focused teaching and learning programs.

Geography Outside: Fieldwork for Geographical Inquiry 

Geography Outside will provide K-6 classroom teachers with a range of practical ideas, tools and methods for undertaking geography fieldwork in the school grounds, the local area and places further afield.

The course will build teachers’ confidence in embedding outdoor fieldwork experiences into geography teaching.

Through participation in fieldwork activities, the course will demonstrate how fieldwork is a core component of the acquiring step of the geographical inquiry process in collecting data for representing, analysing and interpreting data back in the classroom.

The course will also demonstrate a series of scaffolded fieldwork data processing activities that encourage students to think deeply, critically and creatively in formulating evidence-based conclusions and sustainable actions.

Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on the geographical concepts and steps of the geographical inquiry process will be explicitly modelled.

Successful completion of this course requires participation in the workshop and follow up activities.

This course will contribute 10 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 1.2.2, 2.2.2, 3.2.2, 3.4.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

 

DOE Cost: $195 inc GST

Non DOE: $295 inc GST

Includes morning tea, lunch

Geography Fieldwork K-6: Learning Beyond the Classroom 

Geography Fieldwork K-6: Learning Beyond the Classroom will help participants to learn about creative and engaging geography fieldwork techniques, methods and tools.

They will learn how to organise fieldwork learning activities into a well-sequenced set of immersive experiences that embed geography process skills and knowledge content.

This course can be delivered in one two hour session or two one hour sessions.

This course will contribute 2 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 3.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

 

DOE Cost: $40 inc GST

Non DOE: $50 inc GST

Animation Outside: Learning Beyond the Classroom – New

Animation Outside: Learning Beyond the Classroom will help participants to learn about creative and engaging stop motion animation techniques, methods and tools.

Participants will learn how to organise digital learning activities into a set of immersive experiences that embed skills and knowledge content from a variety of key learning areas.

Digital Books: Learning Beyond the Classroom – New

Digital Books: Learning Beyond the Classroom is an introductory course that aims to provide participants with the skills to create engaging interactive texts for iPads using iBooks Author on a Mac.

Participants will learn about good design principles and techniques to create visually engaging multimodal texts which foster curiosity and inspire learning.

They will learn how to create highly engaging digital content for their students with Multi-Touch books that are user friendly and easily accessible.

This course will contribute 2 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 3.4.2 & 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Mobile Connections V1 (dragged)

Geography Action – NEW

Geography Action will help participants develop an understanding of the geography inquiry process and how it applies to the development of sustainability focused and technology rich teaching and learning sequences that can result in positive action for the planet. Participants will examine and unpack Mobile Connections, a Stage 4 teaching and learning program developed to support the Interconnections strand in the Geography 7-10 Syllabus.

This course will provide attendees with an understanding of the 5 step sustainability action process that was used to embed the sustainability cross curriculum priority into Mobile Connections.

Participants will be introduced to the SAMR model of technology integration, and how this can be used to guide the meaningful use of technology in Geography. Participants will explore the use of apps and mobile devices to support the communication phase of the geography inquiry process.

This course will contribute 2 hours towards NESA registered professional development addressing the following Professional Teaching Standards 2.6.2 & 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Plugging into Nature:  Learning Outside the Classroom with iPads

By blending natural experiences with the authentic use of technology it’s possible to create learning experiences that are highly engaging, support cross curriculum priorities and contribute to quality learning outcomes within the new NESA Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

Plugging into Nature will provide participants with practical ideas and pedagogical approaches for using iPads inside and outside the classroom to support teaching and learning.

We will investigate ways of supporting the sustainability cross curriculum priority through the integration of technology and outdoor learning into NESA Syllabus for Australian Curriculum.

Participants will be introduced to the SAMR model of technology integration, relevant cross curriculum priorities, the natural environment strand from the NESA Science syllabus and authentic learning methodologies.

After completion of the one day workshop teachers will develop or modify a series of lessons or a short unit of work to utilise iPads and natural environments as the context for learning.

Teachers will develop a multimodal text that provides an overview of their lesson sequence that will be published to the iBookstore.

This course will contribute 20 hours towards NESA registered professional development. It addresses the following Professional Teaching Standards 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 2.6.2, 3.2.2, 6.3.2, 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These hours contribute towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
